Escape longlisted for Award
 
Escape, the latest novel by Heleen, has been longlisted for the Impac Dublin Award 2009. This literary prize involves an amount of €100.000. This is the second time Heleen has been longlisted for this award. In 2003 that honour fell to The Happy Housewife.

The Happy Housewife: alive and kicking!
 
Eight years after its first publication, The Happy Housewife still causes commotion.

Albert Verlinde’s theatre company will be producing a play based on Heleen’s debut novel, which will be in theaters late next year.

Professor in Political Theory Vaessens refers to The Happy Housewife as an important, interesting book that matters, in short: literature. The Dutch article can be found here.

Last but not least, Professor Meindert Fennema compares The Happy Housewife to Madame Bovary, the worldfamous main character from the book of the same name by Gustav Flaubert. The Dutch article can be read at Groene.nl.

At the poker table


Hardly anything goes on in our corner of the Algarve. The house we live in is on an impassable sandy track; we get very excited when a strange car drives past. Occasionally the shepherd disturbs the peace with his flock of sheep. In principle, I thrive in such a stimulus-free environment. But every now and then I crave a healthy dose of action, tension and excitement. This is no problem so long as I make a bit of an effort to help things along.
